Focus is placed on the future, the productive and youthful members of society who can perpetuate systems and institutions, all while alienating those who will be different and unfit for the job of productive industrial capitalist modern citizen.The premier place on reddit for discussing books and literature, both fictional and non-fictional alike. This rationalizes inequality and nearly suggests, as Herr Fischer literally does, that the rats in the house need to be exterminated. One of my favourite lines is this: I believe that a lack of energy is a lack of moral character –Herr Fischer (Franz Kafka). This gradual process of alienation and moving-out is contrasted by Herr Fischer’s prospective moving-in: When the family tries to rent out the vacant room in their house to the prospective Arian (nazi-like) tenant, all are wooed by his wealth, manner, and philosophy. “It” is cast away by the emerging industrial and capitalist system a freak who can no longer earn a wage becomes a dependent, a creature in the attic. On discussing Gregor’s work habits with Garry Leonard, Gregor’s greater concern with getting the door open and getting on the train to go to work than with being turned into an insect-like creature reminded Garry of the Escape to Illness, a Freudian idea that when one cannot handle the stressors of the world (namely, Gregor’s demanding work life) their body responds with an illness that prevents them from working, which all is a result of subconscious notions (this idea can relate to issues of malingering in clinical psychology: exaggerate or feign illness in order to escape duty or work… Gregor has a bit of an extreme case). Gregor’s world and room were tilted 90 degrees, as they were on stage, suggesting immediately that he is spatially alienated and Othered, as his room is now different from the rest of his normal house, which might not so easily be called “his” anymore. What can be done if you become the foreign one?įleeing into the wilderness or living trapped in the now foreign space that was once your home might not seem like comfortable options, yet for some, this is all they have to choose from. Gregor’s parents are immediately terrified of him and offended by his presence, which they take so far as to injure Gregor who, isolated in his room, was beaten and stripped of all his possessions, not to mention malnourished and eventually mistreated even by his loving sister, Greta. Metamorphosis explores the home-life aspect of this situation. Has a family member or provider that you know been transformed into a foreign entity, one of a different shape and language in any way? No one can understand Gregor, except for the audience of course, because he appears as a massive bug that only screeches NA NA NA NA to the other characters while the audience is made to see and hear Gregor as he was, as the family supporting and music loving young man trapped inside the new insect-like form. The insect-like Gregor (or Franz Kafka (by some views)) is trapped in his room for most of the play, due his family alienating him in his new form, which he just woke up with. The stage is an open two story house for the Samsa Family.
